This is a type of psychotherapy, which combines the expressive function of art with traditional psychotherapeutic techniques and theories. The creative process, believed to be healing in itself, is used as a form of expressive therapy to explore a person’s feelings and experience.
Psychotherapy is particularly useful for looking at difficult emotions, anxieties, fears, personal obstacles or traumatic experiences. Art therapists use the creative process and the therapeutic relationship to assist clients in developing greater self-knowledge, self-expression, autonomy and an increased capacity for choice, along with helping to improve relationships and coping skills. Art therapists work with children, adolescents and adults to bring awareness to their thinking and behaviour in a life-affirming way.
